The strong growth of passenger volumes resulted in Twin Port, a joint development project of the Port of Helsinki and the Port of Tallinn. With this project, both ports made investments, with the goal of increasing capacity and comfort.
Forecasts are challenging, because there are so many factors that influence them. According to our estimates, passenger volumes will continue to grow by 5%, at least for the next five years, said Ingrid Berezin, the Business Manager (cruise and ferry) of the Port of Tallinn.
Already in the coming summer, Tallinn’s Passenger Terminal D will be more spacious.
The new, wider escalators will help crowds move between different floors. All in all, the technical level of the terminal will improve considerably.
The terminal will be like an airport. The Passenger Terminal D will have more cafés and shopping opportunities. The second floor of the terminal will be completely dedicated to waiting for a ship. It will have everything necessary for passengers to feel comfortable while waiting to get on board, briefed Peeter Nõgu, Chief Infrastructure Development Officer at the Port of Tallinn.
The terminal will also have modern check-in points, so that getting on board would be even quicker, said Sirle Arro, the Head of Marketing and Communication Department at the Port of Tallinn.
A new way for cars to reach the terminal
For passengers in vehicles, the journey to and from the Port of Tallinn has been quite hectic, particularly on weekdays. In the future, the route will be smoother.
We will be building an extensive waiting area to the eastern side of the Passenger Terminal D. There will also be new check-in points for vehicles. As far as the traffic is concerned, the best part is that we’ll be building a completely new road for the terminal, which bypasses some of the existing traffic bottlenecks, Peeter Nõgu said happily.
The new traffic arrangements in the terminal area are meant to be completed by the end of 2018.
Planning work regarding the land use of the entire port area is currently underway in Tallinn. The plans have outlined the building of a tramline in the vicinity of the Passenger Terminal D. Its estimated completion time is in the year 2020.
A shorter distance from the ship to the terminal
The arrival of the Megastar on the route between Helsinki and Tallinn requires a lot of work in both ports. Also in Tallinn, the passenger and car gangways will be made compatible with the Megastar. Vehicles will be unloaded from two levels, so a new ramp had to be made for that. The Megastar will be using the Passenger Terminal D’s Pier 5, which is right next to the terminal.
When the Megastar starts traffic, we’ll have a temporary solution for the passenger gangway. The passengers will be using both the new and the old gangway.
From June, we’ll be able to start using a completely new passenger gangway.
The terminal will also have wider escalators, and travelators, familiar from airports, Peeter Nõgu mused with a smile.
Nõgu regrets that the passengers of the Megastar and other Tallink ships will have to endure exceptional arrangements in the coming future.
We’ll do our best for the traffic and everything to run as smoothly as possible. I also believe that we can handle the slightly smaller winter passenger volumes accordingly. In June, many things will be better, and we’ll be expecting larger passenger volumes then!
