The Godmother of Tallink’s LNG-ferry Megastar is President Tarja Halonen

AS Tallink Grupp is proud to announce, that the new generation LNG driven fast ferry Megastar will be christened by Finland`s former President Tarja Halonen.

The CEO of AS Tallink Grupp, Mr. Janek Stalmeister said that the company is honored to have President Halonen as the Godmother of the new environmentally friendly vessel, designed exclusively for the route between Finland and Estonia.

„We share the common values – the responsibility for the health of the Baltic Sea and for the economies and cooperation of our two countries. Megastar is symbolizing them both“,

added Stalmeister.

The christening and float-out of Megastar will take place on 1st of July 2016 in Meyer Turku shipyard, Finland. The ceremony will include the traditional blessing speech by the Godmother, breaking a Champaign bottle to the hull of the ship and opening the dry-dock valves for the float-out of the vessel.

Tarja Halonen is a Finnish politician who was the 11th President of Finland, serving from 2000-2012. She was the first female head of state in Finland. Halonen served in the Finnish parliament from 1979 to 2000, and held several cabinet minister posts, including that of Minister for Foreign Affairs. She was also a member of the Helsinki City Council for almost twenty years. President Halonen has paid much attention during her Presidency and after, both in Finland and internationally, to issues concerning the environment, human rights, gender equality and sustainable development. She is currently working closely with the United Nations on advancing the sustainable development agenda. Among her other activities she is also the President of the Board of Trustees of the WWF Finland and Chair of the Advisory Board of the Centrum Balticum.

Working long hours at the terminal in Tallinn

The Passenger Terminal D, which Tallink uses at the Port of Tallinn, has been in the middle of renovations since last summer. Originally designed for approximately three million annual passengers, the terminal is currently used by double the amount of passengers, so an extension is necessary.
