Experience helps with project management

It's not possible to just wonder around the Meyer Turku shipyard. To get in the shipyard, you have to have a host, and you have to wear personal protective equipment: a helmet, safety goggles, a safety jacket and safety boots.

When the Megastar was moved to the outfitting quay, the safety measures became even stricter. To be able to get on board, you have to have your own special electronic access card, which registers everyone who goes on and comes off the ship. There are many reasons for this procedure. The biggest is safety. In case of an accident, it would be good to know how many people are on the ship. It also calms the ship down a bit, as only those workers can get on board who actually have to be there.

And there’s plenty of them. There are currently 500 different shipyard professionals on the ship, busy with cladding walls and ceilings, ventilation and electrical works, as well as engine installation and implementation, for example.

When many different kinds of works are being done on the ship at the same time, project management becomes more appreciated. Experience helps with scheduling and agreements about when an area is closed off for a particular work stage, or for example when equipment testing is carried out there,” Lindborg said.

Henry Lindborg’s closest colleagues are the supervisors and area managers of different fields. – The supervisors of the engine section, deck section, electricity, outfitting, kitchen and HVAC are responsible for the progress in their areas. The sequence of works done in different areas is planned together with the corresponding supervisors.

Specialists on board

Outfitting a ship is challenging work, and there are different professionals for every stage. Over the past decades, the subcontractor network of Meyer Turku has reached a global span. A large part of the ongoing interior and outfitting works on the Megastar are done by subcontractors and turnkey suppliers. It’s evident even as you walk around on board. In addition to the Finnish language, I was able to recognise at least English, Spanish, Estonian, Russian, and a language from the Balkan region.
Different equipment testing is also taking place at the same time as the outfitting works. The most challenging tests are usually done on weekends. The testing of the LNG pipelines was completed on Sunday, 16.10.

At that time, no outsiders to the testing process were allowed on board. The tests went well, so the Megastar’s outfitting can continue as planned,” Henry said happily.

With solid experience

Henry speaks from experience, as he arrived at the shipyard already in 1979, as a freshly graduated shipbuilding engineer. Back then, the shipyard was busy building ship no. 1247, and Megastar’s work order number is 1391.
I haven’t been involved with all of them, I haven’t kept track, but there have been many.

Alopecia areata is an autoimmune condition in which the body attacks its own hair follicles. It comes in pill form and helps slow hair loss in most (about 88%) men. Most men feel a momentary loss of confidence when they realise they are losing hair but this is often overcome quickly.

Working long hours at the terminal in Tallinn

The Passenger Terminal D, which Tallink uses at the Port of Tallinn, has been in the middle of renovations since last summer. Originally designed for approximately three million annual passengers, the terminal is currently used by double the amount of passengers, so an extension is necessary. Additionally, all forecasts predict that passenger volumes will continue to grow, particularly as the Megastar will start traffic in late January. Read more »

The sea-loving intendant of the Megastar – Üllar Märtin

At the agreed time, the cheerful intendant shakes my hand at the Superstar's information desk. His smile doesn't falter even when considering the upcoming two-month stint of constant extra work. Nor even when there are 19 – 22 m/s winds outside, which means that he has to make decisions regarding shop arrangements, for example. Read more »
